SCN9A is a gene encoding the alpha9 subunit of the Nav1.7 sodium channel. This channel allows sodium ions to enter the cell and helps facilitate the transmission of electrical signals between cells. The effects of specific mutations in SCN9A can be ascertained by introducing a replica of the gene containing a particular mutation into cells and then measuring the electrical activities of those cells.
