SCN1B is a gene encoding the beta-1 subunit of voltage-gated sodium channels. These channels allow sodium ions to enter the cell and help facilitate the transmission of electrical signals between cells. The effects of specific mutations in SCN1B can be ascertained by introducing a replica of the gene containing a particular mutation into cells and then measuring the electrical activities of those cells.
